What is a Nerdminer?
The Nerdminer is an open-source Bitcoin mining device built around the ESP32 microcontroller. Unlike ASIC miners such as the Bitaxe or Nerdaxe, it does not use a dedicated hashing chip. Instead it uses the processing power of a small WiFi-enabled microcontroller to participate in solo Bitcoin mining at a modest hashrate of 75 KH/s.
The project was created by Bitmaker, a Spanish developer who wanted to make Bitcoin mining accessible to everyone, not just those with industrial hardware or technical expertise. The Nerdminer was one of the first open-source home mining devices to gain a following in the Bitcoin community and it remains the most accessible entry point into solo mining today.
Setting up a Nerdminer takes under 3 minutes. Plug it in via USB-C, connect to its WiFi network, enter your home WiFi credentials and your Bitcoin wallet address, and it starts mining automatically. The full walkthrough is available in our Nerdminer Setup Guide.
Nerdminer Models Available at Nerdminer Store
Nerdminer V2 Pro
The Nerdminer V2 Pro is the classic model and the most popular starting point for anyone new to Bitcoin mining. It runs at 75 KH/s on just 1W of power, connects via USB-C and comes in six colours including Black, Blue, Neon Green, Neon Yellow, Pink and Neon Orange. The built-in 1.9-inch full-color TFT display shows your mining stats in real time. At €49 it is the most affordable Bitcoin mining device we carry and a genuine way to put a device on the Bitcoin network from day one.
Nerdminer Quattro
The Nerdminer Quattro takes the Nerdminer concept further by combining four ESP32 microcontrollers on a single board. With four times the processing power of the V2 Pro, it delivers a higher hashrate while keeping the same plug-and-play simplicity. If you want more mining participation from the same open-source platform without moving to ASIC hardware, the Quattro is the natural step up.
Is the Nerdminer Worth It?
The honest answer depends on what you are looking for. The Nerdminer is not a competitive miner in terms of hashrate. A single Bitaxe Gamma delivers over 16,000 times more hashrate than a Nerdminer V2 Pro. But hashrate is not the only reason people run a Nerdminer.
Many users run a Nerdminer because they want to understand how Bitcoin mining works from the inside. Others run one alongside a Bitaxe or Nerdaxe because every additional device on the network contributes to Bitcoin's decentralisation. And some simply enjoy having a small, colourful device on their desk that is doing something real on the Bitcoin network 24 hours a day.
If you are ready for more serious solo mining hardware, our Bitaxe and Nerdaxe ranges offer ASIC-powered options starting from €119.
