Copper from base plate to fins: the cooler of the NerdQAxe Copper Pro, for the board you already run

What is in the box

  • AXP90 Copper Pro cooler with the TL-9015R fan fitted
  • Thermal paste
  • Thermalright mounting kit

The cooling of the Copper Pro, without buying a second miner.

The AXP90 Copper Pro is a Thermalright AXP90-X47 Full. It comes fitted on the NerdQAxe Copper Pro, and here you get it as a part for a board you already run: the NerdQAxe++ or the NerdOctaxe. Base plate, heat pipes and fins are all copper, a 92 mm PWM fan sits on top, and with that fan the cooler weighs 520 g at a height of 47 mm.

What the Full in the name means

Thermalright builds the AXP90-X47 in two versions. The standard one has aluminium fins. The Full, which is the one we sell, has copper fins as well, on top of a C1100 copper base plate and four 6 mm heat pipes. Copper conducts heat better than aluminium and stores more of it per volume, so the block takes up a short rise in load itself before the chip temperature follows.

Which boards it fits

  • NerdQAxe++: yes. The NerdQAxe Copper Pro is this cooler on a NerdQAxe++ board, plus an extra 60 mm fan near the voltage regulators. The AXP90 replaces the stock cooler of your NerdQAxe++ and also serves as a spare for the Copper Pro.
  • NerdOctaxe: yes. Fitting and fan connection work the same way as on the NerdQAxe++.
  • Bitaxe Gamma, NerdAxe Gamma, NerdAxe Gaia: no. These boards supply their fan with 5 V. The Thermalright fan is built for 12 V; on 5 V it turns too slowly to move enough air, and the chip overheats.

For the Bitaxe Gamma, the cooler upgrade to take is the Bitaxe Upgrade Kit Stage 2. The NerdAxe Gaia Pro leaves the factory with the smaller AXP60 Copper Pro, a 60 mm copper cooler for the Gaia board. Your board is not on the list? Ask us before you order.

Fitting it

You need a screwdriver, a little isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

  1. Unplug the power supply and remove the stock cooler.
  2. Wipe the old thermal paste off the chips with the alcohol and the cloth.
  3. Spread the thermal paste from the box and seat the AXP90.
  4. Tighten the screws alternately, a few turns each, until the cooler sits evenly.
  5. Connect the fan to the fan header of the board and power up.

With 520 g on top, give the miner a firm, level place. After the first start, keep an eye on the chip temperature in the AxeOS dashboard; our NerdQAxe++ setup guide shows where to find it and what the other values mean.

What changes, and what does not

A bigger cooler adds no hashrate on its own. At the settings you already run, the chips stay cooler and the fan, which follows the temperature, has less to do. Hashrate only moves when you raise frequency and voltage in AxeOS, and the extra thermal headroom is what lets you do that without the chips running hot. If your board already runs cool at stock settings, the difference will be small.

Running the chips above their stock frequency and voltage is at your own risk and can damage them.

Cooler or Copper Pro

If a NerdQAxe++ already sits on your desk, the AXP90 gives it the cooling of the Copper Pro. If you are buying a miner anyway, the NerdQAxe Copper Pro arrives assembled and with the second fan. Four chips can also be cooled with water: the NerdQAxe++ Hydro. All miners side by side: miner comparison.
