Which Bitaxe is right for you?

The models differ in three things: how many chips sit on the board, how they are cooled and how much power they draw. More chips mean more hashrate, and hashrate is your number of tickets in the block lottery. Efficiency in J/TH decides what each ticket costs in electricity.

  • Bitaxe Gamma: one BM1370, 1.3 TH/s at 17 W. The usual starting point, with a standard or a Noctua fan.
  • Bitaxe Copperzilla: one BM1370 under solid copper, about 1.5 TH/s at 22 W, with headroom for tuning.
  • Bitaxe Gamma Performance and Bitaxe Performance Stage 2: the BM1370 on stronger cooling, built for overclocking up to 1.5 and 2 TH/s.
  • Bitaxe 801: two BM1370 chips on one board, 2.15 TH/s at 43 W.
  • Bitaxe 702: six older BM1368 chips, 4.2 TH/s at 90 W. The most hashrate per euro among our Bitaxe boards, and the least efficient one.

What to look at before you buy

Power and running cost

A Bitaxe runs around the clock. At 17 W the Gamma uses about 12 kWh a month, the 702 at 90 W about 65 kWh. Check your electricity tariff before you choose a multi-chip board.

Noise

With the Noctua option a single-chip Bitaxe stays under 12 dB. The more power a board turns into heat, the harder its fan works: the 702 belongs in a hallway or a workshop rather than next to a bed.

First miner or tuning project

For a first miner take the Gamma: stock settings, ten minutes of setup, nothing to adjust. If you want to change frequency and voltage in AxeOS, the Copperzilla and the Performance models have the cooling for it. Overclocking means more heat and is at your own risk.

Setup and solo mining

Every Bitaxe is set up in the browser: join the Wi-Fi network the miner opens, enter your 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi and your Bitcoin address, save and restart. Our Bitaxe Setup Guide shows every step. Out of the box the miners point at public-pool.io, a solo pool: if your miner finds a block, the reward goes to your own address. At home-miner hashrates that is a lottery ticket, not an income. The background is in our guide to solo mining, coolers for a Bitaxe you already own are in Mods.
